Sambuca is a sweet and strong liquor based on anise, typical of Italy and more specifically of Lazio. "Sambuca" also receives the affectionate diminutive of "sambuchina". Community legislation regulates it by granting it a "sale denomination". Among the requirements for this liqueur to be issued as "sambuca", it is required that it be made with anise, both green and star, and even with other aromatic herbs; but the presence of elderberry in the liquor is not required.
