Pierde Almas Tequilana Weber is one of the rare mezcals made with the same Blue agave that is used in tequila. This mezcal is made by maestro mezcalero Alfonso Sanchez with agave from San Baltazar Chichicapam and San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca. The use of Blue agave in mezcal is not common, yet this type of agave can easily be grown in Oaxaca and other mezcal-producing states as it’s a close relative to agave Espadin. Some agave farmers in Oaxaca planted the blue agave Tequilana after the agave shortage in the 90’s and early 2000’s in Jalisco. Because a similar agave shortage in tequila has yet to reoccur, batches of mezcal made with this agave have been produced. This mezcal is herbaceous and earthy on the nose with notes of anise. It’s sweet and floral on the palate, with a smooth, tropical finish.
